Why are so many people coming forward?
Previously, some people avoided conversations about their lung health because they worried they would be judged for having smoked. While others thought that if they had no symptoms, there was nothing to worry about.
But attitudes are changing, with more Australians seeing lung screening as a simple, free health check to provide early answers, or reassurance and peace of mind. They also tell us the process is easier than they expected.
Should I check my lungs if I feel fine?
Patrick’s story is one example. He didn’t have any symptoms when he saw his doctor for an unrelated health matter. His doctor suggested screening as a precaution because he was eligible. Then the low dose CT scan showed an early-stage lung cancer. His doctor started treatment quickly to improve his chances of a positive outcome.
Another example is Eleesa’s experience. She’d been a smoker since she was 14 and felt fine but wanted to get checked. While her scan showed no signs of lung cancer, it did show early signs of emphysema. Her lung screening results gave her the motivation to give up smoking.
These are some of the many stories shared through Australian lung health organisations of how active people who felt healthy have identified something due to early screening.
What happens during a low dose CT lung scan?
The first step is simply having a conversation with your GP, nurse practitioner or specialist. They will assess whether you meet the eligibility criteria for the National Lung Cancer Screening Program, or whether alternative screening is appropriate for your circumstances.
If you’re eligible, they’ll write a referral for the scan.
At the lung scan appointment, you will be asked to lie comfortably on the CT table while the scanner takes detailed images of your lungs. No needles, no pain and no recovery time. The low dose CT lung scan itself only takes about 30 seconds and the whole procedure only takes about 10 minutes.
Our patients tell us the hardest part was worrying about it beforehand.
Changing the conversation around smoking history
Another great aspect of this program is that its helping people talk more openly about their smoking history and lung health. Many smokers and ex-smokers say they feel guilty or ashamed of their smoking habit, which delayed or stopped them from seeking medical attention.
Now they feel that while they can’t change the past, there’s something positive they can do to get checked without judgement and look after themselves moving forward.
Every patient deserves care, support and access to accurate health information.
Why does early detection matter?
When lung conditions are identified early, doctors often have more treatment options available, and treatment may be less invasive.
Early detection can also reduce uncertainty for patients and their families. And for many people, a normal result brings enormous relief and reassurance.
Because diagnostic imaging isn’t always about finding serious illness. It’s about giving people clarity so they can move forward with confidence and peace of mind.
Is lung screening right for you?
The National Lung Cancer Screening Program is designed for eligible Australians aged 50 to 70 who have a significant smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 10 years. Read more about the eligibility criteria and speak with your GP to see if lung screening is right for you.
