Natasha, Chief Sonographer
During an obstetric scan, we survey the pregnancy to ensure good growth and overall well-being of the baby.
Conversations, building relationships and trust with the patient. Scans can go for close to an hour sometimes, so we get to hear many stories and learn of past histories which is a rewarding part of our role.
Often people think that pregnancy is the main scan we do each day! But it’s only a small amount – mostly we are conducting muscular, skeletal and vascular scans.
It’s both the hardest thing and the most important – the fetal heart. When the baby is not in an ideal position, we need to ask the patient to drink water or move around and keep trying until we can assess the baby’s heart health, structure and function.
It’s important that we try, as Sonographers, to be clinical but not too clinical that it takes away from the patient’s experience. In pregnancy scans, we need to find the balance when embracing the good news but also addressing a sensitive diagnosis. For this reason, obstetric scans are the most important for us when it comes to communication and body language.
